Trips
The Upper Garda Nature Park of Brescia,
with its sheer cliff faces tumbling to the lake, the terraces, paths and
panoramic roads crossing the valleys and climbing the mountains, the woods
of Valtenesi, the hinterland and lakeside, is one of
the most beautiful areas nature has provided. The natural beauty of this
area needs safeguarding if all its treasures are to remain in the future.
Excursions
There are a number of trips to mountain peaks (Pizzocolo,
Spino, Comer - Denervo, Tombea, Caplone, Vesta, Mughera, Carone), or walks
and bicycle rides, plus horse-riding.
There are two main routes from south to north, the Lower Garda
("Montagnoli footpath") and Upper Garda.
- The "Montagnoli" (about fifty kilometres)
starts in Salò and climbs a little to 400/600 meters a.s.l.
then more steeply towards the end, near Limone.
- The Upper Garda follows the old military roads
of the First World War and reaches much higher altitudes: between
1,500 and 1,900 meters in Tombea, Caplone, Lorina, Passo Nota.
There are hundreds of miles of footpaths in the
lower and upper lake areas, often originally created by "carbonai"
or "calcheroc" (producers of limestone) and woodsmen.
Nature trips
Of course one of the most obvious problems is to
know just what to choose in a huge nature reserve, both in terms of wildlife
and flowers, and how to visit the scenery: mountain bike,
horseback or traditional trekking.
After the olive groves along the lakeside slopes you will find vineyards,
chestnut trees, woods (used for fire wood) and forests. The countryside
is full of hornbeams and ash, beech trees and spruce in the upper Valvestino.
Here, particularly in Tombea, the flora is abundant,
with the Daphne petraea and Saxifraga tombeanensis.
The wildlife is also interesting, with lake and river
fish, and game in the mountain area. The eagle and lynx have returned
recently, perhaps the sign that the natural food chain has been restored.
