Sirmione

Sirmione, the pearl of Lake Garda

Defined as “ La Perla del Garda”, Sirmione,  is one of the best known and most visited places on Lake Garda. A peninsula about 4 km long and its heart, the historic village  and the old town, are a tangle of alleys, gardens and unique views on the lake. The ancient Romans discovered sulfur springs here. Among the main attractions, however, there are not only the well-known thermal baths, but also the beautiful caves of Catullus and the Scaliger Castle.

  • Scaliger Castle

The castle in Sirmione was built just after the middle of the fourteenth century at the behest of the Della Scala family of Verona. The castle stands at the entrance of the medieval village and it is an extraordinary example of best-preserved lakeside fortification in the Lake Garda area. (Entrance fee)

  • The Grottes of Catullus and Archeological Museum of Sirmione

At the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, in a fantastic panoramic location, one can find the remains of the largest and most well-preserved Roman villa in northern Italy, which has been known for centuries as Grottoes of Catullus.

The ruins are surrounded by vegetation and it is possible to walk around the grounds and stop at the adjacent museum that exhibits finds from the various periods of history of Sirmione and Benaco. (Entrance fee)
